Hello and thank you for visiting

I’m Rachel, a nature artist based in nipaluna/Hobart in beautiful lutruwita/Tasmania. I specialise in highly realistic colour pencil drawings of wildlife – mainly birds, but also other native animals and the occasional pet portrait.

I’ve always had a love of art and animals, even as a small child growing up in New Zealand and later in Tasmania. I’ve not taken the most direct journey to becoming an artist - I took an extended break from drawing to pursue a career in science, completing my PhD in zoology and working as a research scientist in the United States. I’ve since switched to public policy, but science still drives how I think about the world. It gives me an eye for detail and a keen interest in how animals move and behave - which I think translates well into realistic artwork!

I rediscovered my love of art and drawing in 2020, and haven’t looked back. I work in coloured pencil, which allows for intricate detail and beautiful colour, and have been fortunate to have won awards in this medium. I draw in the evenings and on weekends, and am constantly on the lookout for inspiration – especially on bushwalks.

I started my business and website simply because I loved drawing animals, but I also want to use my artwork to support conservation efforts and raise awareness of the threats to our fragile native wildlife. A portion of the proceeds from all sales is donated to Tasmanian wildlife conservation organisations.

Thank you for visiting my website, and please do get in touch – I’d be delighted to hear from you.
