Commissions

Bespoke original artwork

Would you like me to create a custom piece of original artwork for you? Perhaps you’d like a stunning drawing of iconic Tasmanian wildlife for your home, or an animal portrait for a loved one.

I offer a limited number of commissions each year and I’d be happy to chat with you about the process, my availability and costs.

I’d love to hear from you!

I am fully booked for 2024. If you’re interested in a commission, please sign up to my mailing list - I will contact you when booking slots next become available.

The process

My commission process includes four steps:

1) Choose a size that meets your needs - see my pricing guide on this page for an idea of cost. Depending on your specific requirements, your price may not match the guide exactly. I will give you a final quote once we’ve agreed on the details of your request.

2) Contact me for a chat. Some people know exactly what they want, others do not – both are fine. We can talk through your ideas, reference photo selection (more information on this further down this page), and any specific deadlines (e.g. birthday, Christmas). I will do my best to accommodate your timeframes, but this may not always be possible. My work takes weeks or even months to complete, and is not suitable for short-notice requests. I can prepare digital mock-ups or a quick sketch for your approval and feedback, if needed.

3) Payment Once we’ve agreed on the size, composition, reference photo(s) and any special requests you may have, I will provide a final quote and an approximate date for when I would be able to start work on your artwork. I require a 20% deposit before commencing work. You can choose to pay in full or in instalments.

4) Artwork completion I will contact you again to advise when I am about to start your commission, and can send work-in-progress updates. I will send you a final image for approval, at which time the remaining balance will be due. Once the remaining balance is paid, your artwork is packaged and sent to you.

Price guide

The below prices are estimates only and subject to change. The final quote depends on your specific requirements, such as additional subjects, backgrounds or other elements. I am happy to provide an approximate quote when you contact me.

Pricing includes:

  • Assistance with selecting photographs and composing the image

  • Professional artist grade materials

  • Regular work-in-progress updates as your artwork comes to life

Artworks are shipped unframed and unmounted. Postage is calculated once you provide me with your delivery address. Local pick-up (Hobart, TAS) also available.

*Please note the above sizes refer to the size of the paper and not the drawing itself. The size of the drawing will vary depending on its composition and to allow sufficient space for mounting and framing. Larger sizes and paper orientations (e.g. square) available on request.

Social media

I post progress pictures and images of commission pieces to my social media accounts and website. I would of course be happy to delay posting any images of your commission until after it has been received and/or gifted to the recipient - please let me know at the time of booking.

More on reference images

I work from high-quality photographs to ensure I can produce a stunning piece of artwork. Here is some information on two major factors I need to consider:

QUALITY - A high-quality reference photo is in focus with plenty of detail and naturally lit (outdoors is best). This includes photos taken using phone cameras. For portraits, photographs should be taken at the subject’s eye level, otherwise the body proportions can look distorted. Check if a reflection is visible in the subject’s eye - if not, it is likely too dark. I understand sometimes it is not possible to take additional photos (e.g. to commemorate a lost pet) and I would be happy to talk to you about what might be possible. I can work from multiple photographs if needed.

COPYRIGHT - Please only send me photographs you have taken yourself, or if you have written permission from the photographer. This includes images you may have purchased from a professional photographer (e.g. from a photo shoot) as they still own the copyright.

For wildlife commissions, I can use images found online, provided they are royalty free (e.g. from websites like Pixabay), an extended licence has been paid for (e.g. iStock), or the photographer has provided written permission to use their image (e.g. via Instagram). Please note some photographers charge a fee for using their images. I can assist you with finding an appropriate reference image and seeking permission – let me know if you have a particular image in mind.
